Using an ILL document in a Course

A faculty member asked if it is ok to put and article into course management system that he has received through ILL. Does the ILL factor make a difference when applying fair use?

I do this often. If he requested the article for himself and then finds it's something he wants his students to read, then it should be okay to place it on reserve. Our policy for this is one semester only since we do not own the item. If he wants to repeat, I either pay the copyright fees for use or try to find an electronic copy without restrictions for ereserves.

We do this quite a bit, too, but if we don't have a current print or electronic subscription to the journal, we pay copyright fees even if it's the only semester it's being used.
