Sound Effects Copyright

My question is, are the sound effects copyrighted even if they are everyday sounds? Like footsteps, doorbell, or thunder. Do I need to make my own or find public domain ones.

  Interesting question.  My thougth would be that sound effects could be copyrighted if they were creative and original enough to get protection, but that in general, they are not protected.
