Sound Effects Copyright

  • I am making a short film and I have a copyright question. In my short film I use several sound effects. I find free ones online and download them. My question is, are the sound effects copyrighted even if they are everyday sounds? Like footsteps, doorbell, or thunder. Do I need to make my own or find public domain ones.

  • Interesting question.  My thougth would be that sound effects could be copyrighted if they were creative and original enough to get protection, but that in general, they are not protected.

My colleagues may have additional thoughts.

  • You can also consider using sound effects licnesed with a Creative Commons licneses. Freesound.org a huge library of sounds, many of which have Creative Commons licneses attached...
