Can I copyright an illustration made up of other small licensed elements?

  • Good morning,

I have created a digital illustration for sale as a printed design. My illustration is made up of other smaller elements that I have bought a commercial liccense for. Can I now copyright my illustration?

    Thank you.

  • You'll want to review the terms of the commercial license(s) you entered into when acquiring the smaller elements. If the copyright in these smaller elements was transferred to you exclusively as part of your purchase, then you would hold the copyright in the entire design of the illustration. If you were instead granted a non-exclusive license to use these smaller elements in new works you develop then you would only hold the copyright in the original, creative components of the illustration you created, not the smaller components.

  • Thank you very much.
