Hi! My name is Jil.
I am here to ask questions about using screen shoots in my dissertation.
Currently, I am working on my dissertation with a qualitative content analysis method.
That said, I need to do an in-depth analysis on movies that I personally choose for my dissertation, namely An Inconvenient Truth, Chasing Ice, and Before the Flood.
But, I have a concern about using screen-shoots from those movies in my dissertation.
I'm afraid that PERHAPS it will be considered as an act of violating copyrights.
Therefore, I am here to ask if its okay or not to do it for dissertation? ofc I will throughly site the movies, and each and every screen shoot I took.

I think your use is a fair use, but your college may be strict and say no. I would check with the graduate college and ask them if it is allowed. It's not an infringement so you shoul be able to do it, but I have heard stories that you must ask permission for the use of any image in a dissertation.
If you do end up writing to the rights holder to ask permission, they won't respond. Try, if you have to but I have never known them to repsond for image requests for non-profit uses.
Another idea is to ask a faculty member who works in film and ask what they suggest.
Good luck!
