Do virtual open mic night performances need to be original content?

My library is looking to host a Virtual Open Mic Night in the upcoming weeks. We were thinking of inviting folks to read poetry, short stories, or songs; They will only have about a 5 minute timeslot. I've run into the question of whether the content needs to be original? Could they read another poet's poem? Can they cover a song? Is there a different answer if the event is only open to the performers and is not recorded? Any and all help is appreciated!
