beginner question about book copyright

← Return to forum

  • I'm trying to research the copyright on a book printed in 1959, but I'm unclear whether reprinting a book entails renewing the copyright. I would assume so, but I wasn't able to find any copyright records at the loc.gov website, although I would have expected a renewal to appear within their timeframe (after 1978). Despite that, the book has been reprinted several times. What can I conclude from this?

    Thanks,
    Blake
  • It's hard to say without knowing if the copyright was renewed. Reprinting a book doesn't necessitate renewing the copyright. If it wasn't renewed, it's in the public domain. If it was renewed, then it's the standard 95 years past publication.
