They don't need to do anything special to copyright their logos- their logos are protected by copyright when they are created.

They also tend to get trademark protection for their logos. Many colleges strictly enforce their trademarks. Many also license their trademarks for commercial use. You'll need to contact the college before using their trademarks to find out what their licensing terms are.

I mean that you probably need to get a license to copy their logo for your t-shirt printing.
