goverment pictures

  • Do I need permission to use photographs(animal pictures) you get off a government website? Do I need permission for pictures I get off of Google Images? I would like to publish them in a book.
  • I think that you'll need to check. Generally, federal government documents in the U.S. are not protected by copyright, but there are some exceptions. If the photographs were part of contracted work, for example, they may be protected by copyright.

Pictures retrieved from Google Images are just like pictures you'd find elsewhere. There is a good chance that they are protected by copyright.
