copyright question

  • I have a book that was published before 1970; it does not contain a valid copyright notice. The publisher is located in New York, but below that it states the book was printed in Germany and bound in Holland. Does that have any significance in terms of copyright?
  • We had long discussion of this on the forum recently. If you do a keyword search on valid notice you will see the discussion on this topic.
The printing and binding places are not what matters, but where it was first published and when and if it was published in another country. The NY publication may have occurred at the same time or very shortly before or after the foreign publication--you would need to investigate. Or, if the US is the only publication and there truly is no notice, then it would be in the public domain.
