E reserves and copyright fees

  • If this information is not too discretionary, I would like to know how other libraries handle paying for ereserves that the library posts for faculty members. I am thinking mainly of book chapters that a professor wants to use a second time or journals not handled by the CCC.

Some of my questions would be as follows:

Do you have an upper limit as to how much you will pay for permissions before you deny the request?
    Can you share that limit?

Do you have any type of policy that if the hard copy is available that will be put on course reserve in place of the chapter on BB even if this is not the professor's preference?

When using the CCC, the cost is obvious and permission easy to obtain. If you need to contact the publisher and have no idea about the cost, do you put the article on BB while requesting permission? Many faculty don't plan ahead and don't have time to wait for this process.

Any information around this issue that you can share would be helpful.

We have a limit of $100 per item and $250 per class. I do exceed this limit at times, but I personally feel that even $100 for an item is excessive. This is usually for a short story for an English class.

No. If they want electronic and it is either fair use or we pay, then we put it on ereserve.

I put the item up and if permission comes back either denied or too expensive, then I take it down. It is okay to do this.
