DVD Returns

  • So this isn't really a library related copyright question but hopefully someone will give me an answer. I bought a DVD boxed set at Wal-Mart and the last disc was scratched. I tried returning it but they employees there said that "Federal Copyright Law" prevented them from doing anything but exchanging the DVD for an exact copy (which of course they didn't have). This seems fishy to me, I mean sure I could buy a DVD rip it and return it but I could do the same thing for a rental and that's not illegal. So is this a real law or are they just trying to get out of the return?
  • Strictly speaking, I think it's probably not illegal for them to take the return. However, it does seem to be common practice. My guess is that the publishers will not provide them a refund for this type of product.
