Copyright protection of data tables, graphs, charts

Currently I am looking for examples to use in an online tutorial on copyright basics I'm putting together. I'm also wondering what part of the copyright law best addresses this issue. "Compilation copyright" covers databases if they meet the requirements of originality, but would a chart/graph/table be a compilation?
Any guidance you can offer would be appreciated.
