Copyright of old translations

  • I would like to use, for publishing purposes, an old translation of a 250 year old document. This original document, I suppose, to be in the public domain. There have been several English translations over time, some recent, and some over 100 years old.

Question. Can I re-publish the old translations (not sure exactly when they were originally published but likely over 50 years ago) without violating copyright laws? In most of these cases with the old translations, the translator has died. Not sure if his/her heirs have filed for protection.

    Thanks.
